Easter in Spain

On Friday, school will finish for Easter week (Semana Santa), the biggest religious celebration in Spain.  Hundreds of towns and villages throughout Spain will hold elaborate processions throughout the week with marching bands, and people carrying huge thrones (tronos) with religious figures on top.  Many of the people in the processions will have their faces covered.  Traditionally, this means that they are penitents, people who want to make up for doing something they shouldn’t have done.  Women often wear a black mantilla, a beautiful veil made of lace and worn with a comb on the back of the head.

Getting to Grips with Time

Spiral Time

This week, we have been working on telling the time to the nearest minute, using our number bonds to 60 to help us with our ‘minutes to the hour‘ times, and beginning to calculate time intervals.  In Sports, we estimated and then counted how many times we could do a different activity, for example, star jumps.

Two websites with activities which we really liked were Maths Frame and BBC Bitesize.

Place Value Fun in the Sun

We have been working on place value in numbers a lot so far this term. This means that we think about the value of each digit in a number.  In the number 465, the 6 is in the tens place so it has a value of 60.  The 4 is in the hundreds place so it has a value of 400.

Today, we took our place value equipment along to our sports lesson at Paco Cantos for a Place Value Race to 100!

We worked together in teams to see who could reach 100 first.  We had to run fast, think fast and think well in order to win, but we realised that there was some luck involved, too!

Andalucia Day

Andalucia mapFebruary 28th is El Día de Andalucía, a holiday where we celebrate what it is to be Andaluz.  In school, we celebrated the day on Thursday.  Everyone was invited to come in typical Andalucian dress or in the colours of the Andalucian flag – white and green.

We ate a typical Andalucian breakfast, pan con aceite y azucar (bread with olive oil and sugar), learned a lot about some of the important Andalucian cities (Malaga, Cordoba, Seville, Cadiz, Granada) and learned to dance Sevillanas with Miss Mora.

Ancient Egypt in Year 3

It’s Book Week at BSM!

Yes, it’s that time of the year when we have a whole week of celebrating books at BSM! Thank you, Mrs Griffiths, for making our classroom look so inviting with the cover from one of my favourite books, ‘The Cat in the Hat’ by Dr Seuss.

We’ve been doing some shared reading with children from the younger years this week.  Nursery paid a visit to us in our classroom and we went to Year 1 to read to them in theirs.  We all agreed that sharing a book is a great way to make new friends and enjoy a good story at the same time!

One of Mrs Ower’s favourite children’s books is called Silverwing and is by Kenneth Oppel.  It’s a really exciting adventure story whose main character is a Silverwing bat.  He gets lost on a long journey and the book is all about how he finds his way back to his family.   Mrs Ower read it to her daughter when she was in Year 3 and they both enjoyed it so much that they read the other two books in the series, too.

How to become a Super Speller
